How fuel cost is calculated

Fuel cost depends on three main factors: the distance you travel, your vehicle's fuel economy, and the current fuel price.

First, the calculator determines how much fuel your vehicle is expected to use. It then multiplies the estimated fuel consumption by the fuel price.

Fuel cost formula

Fuel used = Distance ÷ Fuel economy

Trip cost = Fuel used × Fuel price

The calculation automatically adjusts to the distance and fuel economy unit you select, including miles, kilometers, MPG and km/L.

Example: 500-mile trip

Suppose you travel 500 miles in a vehicle that averages 30 MPG, and fuel costs $3.50 per gallon.

Fuel used = 500 ÷ 30 = 16.67 gallons

Trip cost = 16.67 × $3.50 = $58.33

In this example, the estimated fuel cost is $58.33.

When to use a fuel cost calculator

A fuel cost calculator can help you estimate travel expenses before you start a trip. It is useful when planning a road trip, comparing vehicles or estimating the cost of regular driving.

01

Plan a road trip

Estimate how much you may spend on fuel based on the total distance, vehicle fuel economy and fuel price.

02

Estimate commuting costs

Calculate the fuel cost of regular driving by entering your expected distance and vehicle fuel economy.

03

Compare vehicles

Use different fuel economy values to compare the estimated fuel cost of vehicles over the same distance.

04

Estimate a travel budget

Add the estimated fuel expense to your other travel costs when planning a trip budget.
